to afford rent. don ford reports. >> reporter: the government defines affordable housing as costing less than a third of your income. but a new study is out that says california's average two- bedroom apartment is now more than $1,300. and for that to be affordable, your full-time job would have to pay $26.02 an hour. >> what if you don't make that much? what if you make minimum wage? well, that's where the numbers really get grim. >> reporter: to afford the same apartment, the household would have to include 3.3 minimum wage earners working 40 hours a week year round. or a single person making $8 an hour would have to work 130 hours a week, 52 weeks a year. >> obviously that's not realistic. you can't work more than 24 hours in a day and nobody does so what that means is that families are struggling to get by. they are spending much, much more than 30% of their income towards the rent. >> reporter: shelter, inc., is an organization that helps find housing for people in contra costa county who end up on the street. people like jenna weathers and heath

of a police officer was rammed by a ford bronco in san jose. it sat there at 4:00 this morning. the driver of the bronco was taken to the hospital. >> any time that you are involved in a collision where someone hits you, we don't know if it's on purpose or an accident. so better safe than sorry. >> the police officers were not hurt and the chp investigation continues. >>> parents of some high school students in pleasanton are keeping their kids home today. it's all because of threatening graffiti discovered in a girls' bathroom that specifically mentions today, march 14th. despite the threat, school district officials say overall attendance at foothill high school is high. security is ramped up this week with four resource officers patrolling the campus. the threat is specifically for today. it reads "i hate everyone at this school, watch me shoot everyone on march 14th. i swear to god." we spoke with parents this morning who say they are happy with the increased security. >> my daughter will be here and the way i look at it is i'm not gonna

near berryessa, truck from struck from behind by the ford bronco, the driver was transported to the hospital. he did have some injuries. we have officers en route to get a statement. we don't know what happened. >> reporter: we heard reports he had blood on him, the driver, he might have been injured beforehand, can you tell me about his condition? >> he did sustain injuries. as far as where, we're still under investigation. >> is he talking? has he been responsive to police as to why he hit the police officer's car? >> he was when he first got out of the vehicle, at the time he was being transported he wasn't. we don't have that information. >> reporter: he's being detained, arrested? >> just transported to the hospital at this time for his medical condition so he can be treated for that and we have officers en route to get a statement as far as what happened from his version of the story. >> how is the police officer? >> everyone is fine. >> reporter: thank you very much, sergeant. again, we will follow up on any updates on this case and
